TRIPS

The Trust runs various sailing related activities with the aim to build long-term relationships with the young people who have sailed with us.  We write each year inviting them back to continue their sailing experience with the Trust, up until their remission date or their 18th birthday.  As well as continuing their sailing qualifications, it gives the young people a chance to meet up with old friends and make new ones who have all shared the same experiences.

As well as building a relationship, strengthening friendships and having a lot of fun, our ‘return to sail’ programme is vital to realise our aim of inspiring young people who are in recovery to return as volunteer crew on our trips once they reach the age of 18.  Tyler, 15 came on his first trip in 2008 and his mother had this to say:  “Tyler gained lots of confidence and lots of new friends who he is still in touch with.  I am really glad he went.  To meet children who have been through the same thing is invaluable.  Tyler also met a volunteer in his twenties who had the same cancer as him which gave Tyler a lot of hope for the future.”

We are proud to have helped support one of our young people Dan Monk through his Yachtmaster qualification in 2007 and seen him return to skipper for our trips, and in 2008 eight young people returned as volunteers, including Vicky, who was part of our shore team all summer, providing positive role models for those sailing with us for the first time.

Ellen MacArthur Trust Skandia Round Britain Voyage

Ellen MacArthur Trust Skandia Round Britain Voyage

In May 2009 we began a unique voyage, following in our founding Patron's footsteps, sailing Round Britain with stopovers in 17 key ports. The voyage was made up of a total of 16 legs with 74 young people recovering from cancer and leukaemia sailing onboard. Many of the legs were linked to the Hospital where the young people onboard were treated and included a visit back to their oncology ward to talk to those currently in treatment about the voyage. The voyage returned to Cowes, IOW on 12 Sept 2009, and you can find out more about this inspirational adventure by following the link below.

TESTIMONIALS

“Dan returned very happy, positive, enthusiastic, talks about sailing all the time. Daniel is now keep to continue and improve his sailing skills. You are all doing a wonderful job and are giving back joy, confidence and happiness to children who have been through a very touch time. Daniel has expressed he would like to be a spokesperson for the Trust, maybe speaking to children in hospital about his experiences with the Trust, showing them that something good can come from the awful illness they have had, that what they have been through can make them a stronger person.” Mother of Dan, 16
