Ellen MacArthur Trust youngsters head out to join Gipsy Moth IV in Crete
Three young people, all of whom have previously sailed with The Ellen MacArthur Trust, will fly out to join Gipsy Moth IV crew in Crete on Friday (06/04/07). The youngsters will be participating in day-sailing and short passages around the island until the vessel continues on to Malta as part of it’s historic circumnavigation.
Larvell (15), Rachael (13) and Frances (14) all from Nottingham, will be flying from Gatwick Airport with Frank and Mark from The Trust to commence their five days sailing around the Mediterranean Sea. They were all selected for the Gipsy Moth IV trip after sailing with The Ellen MacArthur Trust last summer, on a trip organised with the help of Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham. The three youngsters, who are all in remission from cancer and leukaemia, are now looking forward to their trip of a lifetime.
This is no holiday and during their time away, the crew will be actively involved in all areas from sailing the vessel to washing up. They will be providing daily updates for the Gipsy Moth IV website as well as undertaking oceanographic research recording sightings of mammals and other sea life as part of a programme coordinated with the University of Plymouth. The youngsters will participate in live telephone conferences with their schools as they travel around the world, making this voyage truly interactive and raising awareness of the work they are undertaking.
The berths were provided as part of the ongoing relationship between The Ellen MacArthur Trust and UKSA. The Academy has provided all the logistical support to the EMT over the last five years and continues to provide yachts and skippers for the four day trips in the summer.
Stopping at 32 locations, visiting 25 countries Gipsy Moth IV will take 100 deserving young adults on a life changing voyage during it’s circumnavigation of the globe.
