Andrew sails Round Britain for The Ellen MacArthur Trust

The Ellen MacArthur Trust Ball @ Skandia Cowes Week in association with Calyon and English Heritage

On the 4th August 2008 this years Trust Ball takes place in the Royal surroundings of Osborne House. On arrival guests will be able to take a stroll through the grounds or be transported by horse and carriage to the house where following a short walk through Queen Victoria’s former residence they will join the Champagne reception on the terrace (pictured right). Guests will then move into the traditional Marquee which will be positioned on the durbar lawn next to the house.

Race 9 Finish and infected fingers!

After a period of light winds the decision to shorten race 9 from Santa Cruz to Panama was made by the race office of the Clipper round the world yacht race. This resulted in EMT ambassador Dan Monk and the crew aboard Nova Scotia taking fourth position they narrowly missed out on a podium position by just an hour. All the yachts are currently making their best speed towards Panama.

Dan cut his finger earlier on in the leg which has become infected and has recently had to operate on himself! it seems to be getting better now - we are all delighted to hear!

Mates and Volunteers required for our summers trips

The Ellen MacArthur Trust still has places for volunteers first mates and crew leaders for our summer sailing trips. Our trips are run throughout July, Monday to Thursday. The children will come from all over the UK, the trips are predominantly about having fun and working as a team. Ideally you will have some sailing experience, be confident on the water and enjoy working with children. All applications will be considered on an individual basis and you will be expected to attend our volunteer induction day on the 7th June on the Isle of Wight where we will CRB check you.

EMT Stand at the Start of the Artemis Transat

The Ellen MacArthur Trust is currently in Plymouth, we are lucky enough to have a stand in the race village in the lead up to the start of the Artemis Transat race on the 11th May.

The race village is in Sutton Warf where all the boats are on show before the start. There is a wonderful atmosphere down here with hundreds of people enjoying the weather whilst viewing the specticle that is the Artemis Transat race village. The EMT stand is based in the educational tent so if you are in the area please come in and say hello. We look forward to seeing you in Plymouth!

Race 9 Day 10; Santa Cruz to Panama

EMT Ambassador Dan Monk is aboard Nova Scotia in the Clipper round the world race, they are currently racing along the Mexican coastline in sixth position. With only 21 knm to the leaders and over 1300 knm to the next finish line there is still a lot to play for. Below is a copy of Dans first blog as a crew member aboard Nova Scotia.

Race 9 Day 7; Santa Cruz to Panama

The Clipper round the world fleet are currently battling it out racing along the western coast of Mexico. EMT ambassador Dan Monk is aboard Nova Scotia who are currently 27 Knm behind the leaders in 6th Position, all is well aboard racing in relatively light downwind conditions with the odd school of dolphins.

The yachts are currently racing towards Panama where they will make the Transit between the Pacific and the Atlantic through the Panama Canal. The canal is 51 miles long and is a triumph of engineering, cutting through one of the narrowest strips of land, that joins North and South America. The Canal uses a system of locks which function as water lifts to raise the yachts from sea level, either the Pacific or the Atlantic, to the level of Gatun Lake, 26 metres above sea level. The yachts will then sail the channel through Continental Divide. After the unabashed industrialism of the locks, the transit passes through some of the most beautiful scenery and wildlife habitats to be seen anywhere.

Race 9 day 6; Santa Cruz to Panama

The Clipper Round the World fleet still have nearly 2000 knm to race before reaching the finishing this leg in Panama. There is currently some close match racing going on between the lead boats whilst the rest of the fleet are jostling for positions. EMT ambassador Dan Monk is racing aboard Nova Scotia who are currently lying in 7th position. At the moment they are experiencing light downwind conditions and are trimming constantly to try and maintain maximum boat speed.

Dan has sailed with the Trust since 2003, coming back year after year despite a relapse. Eventually qualifying as a Yachtmaster and working for the trust last year as a skipper. Funding for Dan to take part in this historic race has come in the form of Philip Green memorial trust and JP Morgan Asset Management.
